Murder mystery novel set in Boulder wins IPPY award
Local author draws on Boulder’s quirkiness and landmarks to unravel mystery
BOULDER, CO – (May 23, 2007) – Boulder author Lynn Osterkamp’s first mystery novel, Too Near the Edge,
was awarded a Silver Medal in the 2007 Independent Publisher Book Awards (“IPPYs”), which honor the year’
s best independently published books. Her book ranked second in the Best Regional Fiction—West-Mountain
category. The awards will be presented at the 11th Annual IPPY Awards event on Friday, June 1, 2007,
during the BookExpo America (BEA) convention held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.
Too Near the Edge is a character-driven mystery with a paranormal twist, a humorous tone, and a whimsical
heroine who grapples with tough questions about love, reality, ethics and trust. In this “only in Boulder” story,
high-tech, academic, and new-age worlds collide as a grief therapist and a surfer-dude spirit help a young
widow investigate the death of her husband who fell from the edge of the Grand Canyon.
“I am honored that Too Near the Edge was chosen for this award in the best regional fiction category because
the Boulder setting is an important part of the story. Readers from other parts of the country have said that
the book made them want to visit Boulder,” said Osterkamp.
Launched in 1996 as the first unaffiliated awards program open exclusively to independents, the IPPY Awards
have increased the recognition of independent, university and self-published titles. Now in its eleventh year, it
is considered the most comprehensive and largest book award contest in the world. This year’s IPPY Awards
received 3,378 entries from all 50 states, eight Canadian provinces and 17 countries overseas. The regional
“IPPYs,” designed to spotlight the best regional titles, had 688 entries from the United States and Canada.
IPPY Award judging is based on content, originality, design and production quality, with a special emphasis on
innovation and social relevance. Judging panels include experts from the fields of editing, designing,
reviewing, retailing and libraries.
